ANGLO-PERUVIAN SOCIETY |
The Anglo - Peruvian Society is a registered charity which was founded in 1961 to advance the education of the people of Great Britain about Peru, its people, history, language and literature, its institutions, folklore and culture and its intellectual artistic and economic life. To relieve poverty and sickness amongst the people of Peru." |
The Society is run by a voluntary committee, elected at an Annual General Meeting with sub-committees dealing with specific responsibilities. |
A series of events are organised throughout the year for members and their guests. The programme includes lectures, film shows and exhibitions as well as Peruvian "fiestas" and peñas where Members can enjoy typical Peruvian cuisine, music and dance. The traditional "28 de Julio", Independence Day, is another occasion which brings Members together for a Pisco Sour. |
The Society also offers encouragement and support to individual or Corporate Members who may wish to stage their own cultural events or promote Peruvian artistes or lecturers visiting the UK. |
The Society sponsors enterprises which further the aims of the society, such as university and school expeditions to Peru. These groups are subsequently invited to give Members an illustrated talk about their work and experiences, at an annual "Expeditions Evening". |
Very much aware of environmental issues in Peru, the Society regularly promotes on-going projects directly linked to conservation in some of Peru’s ecologically important nature reserves. |
Also of importance are the activities linked to raising funds and collecting clothes and equipment which are sent to Peru by sea-container at regular intervals. The items collected include second-hand clothing, in good condition, educational toys, hospital equipment, wheel-chairs, spectacles, artificial limbs, blankets, sewing machines, type-writers, tools etc… Specific medical supplies are also included. |
Distribution is via the Society’s Agent to carefully monitored projects. These in recent years have included children’s homes, hospitals, workshops, schools, soup kitchens etc. in areas of greatest need throughout Peru, from Piura in the north to Tacna in the South, Puno is the high sierra to Yurimaguas in the rainforest jungle. |
Whenever possible members of the committee visit the projects to see the donations in use and bring back new ideas for the future. Ordinary Members visiting Peru would also receive the same warm welcome from any of the Society beneficiaries.
Members of the Society are encouraged, not only to join in the many cultural and social events, but to spend some of their own time and talents to help the Anglo-Peruvian Society achieve its objectives in raising awareness of Peru in Britain and lending a friendly and helping hand where it is most needed. |
