Dry and mild.  
  History:
Human vestiges dating back 12,000 years and believed to be the oldest in Peru have been found in this department. The region has been durably influenced by the Paracas culture. Other civilisations also flourished here, before being replaced by the Wari culture between the 7th and 10th centuries A.D.
 
  Places of Interest:
Ruins of Vilcas Huaman – Wari remains – Pampa de la Quinua. Several colonial houses in Ayacucho are worth a visit: Casa del Marques de Valdelirios (Jr. Arequipa 102) – Casa del Marques de Moyobamba (28 de Julio 197) – Casa del Marques de la Totora (Portal Union 637) – 69 Casa del
 
    Regidor Don Jose Garcia del Hoyo (Portal Constitucion 20) – Casa de la Viuda de Alcala (Portal Independencia 65).
 
    The Cathedral in Plaza Sucre has a Renaissance-Baroque front, Mudejar-style choir and a silver-plated tabernacle on the high altar. Its gold monstrance stands more than a metre high.
Other churches include Santo Domingo, San Agustin, La Compania, Santa Clara, San Francisco de Paula and San Francisco de Asis.
 
    Holy Week celebrations in Ayacucho provide eloquent testimony to their participants' reli-gious fervour. while thousands of visitors make the trip each vear expressly for the occasion.
