ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES
 
   
Huaca Pan de Azucar o Huallainarca. A pyramidal pre-Inca shrine built with small adobe bricks shaped like maize grains.The museum has interesting exhibits. (Nicolas de Rivera 201 - San Isidro. Tel. 4404887)
 
   
Huaca Pucllana o Juliana. Another pyramidal monument apparently serving ceremonial and administrative purposes in the earliest stages of the Lima culture. (Gral. Borgono, cuadra 8 - Miraflores, intersecting Av. Arequipa, cuadra 45)
 
   
Pachacamac. The shrine dedicated to the god Pachacamac had major ceremonial significance in pre-Inca times. The Incas later built the temples of the Sun and the Moon, yet allowed their vassals to to continue worshipping their own god. The wooden idol found in the original shrine is on display in the museum, as are pottery and textile items. (Valle de Lurin. 31 km south of Lima on the Pan-American highway. Puruchuco. Indigenous chiefs residence in pre-colonial times. A museum is attached. (Carretera Central, Km 7.5 - Ate. Tel. 511 430 5607)
 
   
Cajamarquilla. A pre-Inca city with walled plazas and numerous grain storage structures. (Carretera Central. Km 12.5 - turn-off on the left. 5 km on road)
 
   
San Juan de Pariache. Pre-Inca edifice similar to that in Puruchuco. (Carretera Central, Km 16 - turn-off on the right)
 
   
OTHER TOURIST ATTRACTIONS
 
   
Las Leyendas Zoo. Animals from Peru 's coastal, highland and tropical regions may be admired here.

 
   
Plaza de Acho. A bullring built in the 18th century and still the focus of Lima 's bullfighting passions; the "Golden Scapulary of the Lord of Miracles" is awarded every year to the season's best bullfighter.
 
   
Ancon. A beach resort 42 km from downtown Lima .

 
   
Costa Verde. The capital's waterfront includes beaches only a few minutes from the city centre.
