  History:
Situated between the Itaya and Amazon rivers, Iquitos was originally a missionary settlement named after the local native tribe.

The town's official designation as Peru 's First Fluvial Port took place on January 5, 1864 under the administration of Ramon Castilla , who dispatched the battleships Pastaza and Prospero for the occasion.

The rubber-boom heritage includes elegant houses decorated with colourful handpainted wall tiles brought from Valencia , Seville and Portugal .

The region later became important for its timber resources and, more recently, its oil reserves (extraction has been under way since 1970).
