  History:
Ever since the 16th century Tacna had been a strategic location along the trade route passing through Arica , notably in the light of mining activities in Potosi . During the independence campaign the town was the site of many patriotic initiatives, such as the revolts led by Zela and Paillardelli. Its contribution to the cause of Peruvian independence earned Tacna the title of " Heroic City ". As a result of the War of the Pacific (1879-1883) Tacna was occupied by Chile , but was returned to Peru in 1929.
