  MINING

Peru is sixth world producer of gold and copper and the first of silver. Its lead and zinc production is also important. Minerals are the main source of income as traditional exports and account for almost 50% of total exports from 1998 to 2003. Mining sector has had the highest growth in the last years because of new investment and the beginning of production in new sites. Among these, the most important are Yanacocha (Newmont and Buenaventura ), Pierina (Barrick) for gold, Volcán-Paragsha (Volcán) for zinc, Antamina for copper and zinc and Las Bambas (Xstrata) for copper.
